In wet and damp locations, two documents decide whether a luminaire belongs in a project: the CE conformity evidence behind its European market file, and the IP rating marked on its enclosure. They answer different questions. CE marking shows that a fixture has been assessed against the applicable electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards. Two markers, two different jobs

The CE marking on a luminaire is a declaration that the product conforms with the applicable European requirements. Its supporting file normally contains evidence from two separate assessments: a low voltage directive (LVD) safety evaluation and an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) evaluation. For recessed luminaires, the relevant safety standard is EN IEC 60598-2-2, which sits next to the general luminaire standard EN IEC 60598-1. EN IEC 60598-2-2 sets out particular requirements for recessed luminaires, including thermal and construction provisions that apply because the fixture body is installed into the building fabric.
